Meet Betsy and Bobbie: The Story Behind Our Highland Cow Range

Some of our best design ideas don't come from trend reports or mood boards. They come from looking out the kitchen window.

That's exactly how our new Highland Cow range came to life — inspired by two shaggy, good-natured faces we see most mornings from our own property: Betsy and Bobbie, our neighbours' Highland cows.

The neighbours who started it all

Betsy and Bobbie aren't ours, but after years of waving to them over the fence, they might as well be family. There's something about their sleepy eyes, wild fringes, and general air of not being in a hurry that felt like it belonged on a tea towel — or an apron, or a set of pot holders.

So that's what we did.

We took their unmistakable Highland charm and turned it into a range that's warm, a little cheeky, and unapologetically Australian in spirit — even if the breed itself hails from much colder pastures.

A little about the breed

Highland cattle originated in the Scottish Highlands, and they're one of the oldest and most recognisable cattle breeds in the world. Their most famous feature is that shaggy double coat — a long, coarse outer layer over a soft, woolly undercoat — which evolved to handle harsh, wet winters rather than an Australian summer, but it does make for a very good-looking cow.

Then there are the horns. Long, wide, and dramatic-looking — but Highland cattle are known for being surprisingly docile and good-natured, which is probably why Betsy and Bobbie have never once seemed bothered by us stopping to admire them.

Between the fringe, the horns, and that unmistakable ginger coat, it's easy to see why the breed has become such a popular motif in homewares lately. We just happened to have two real-life muses right next door.

Bringing the design to life

The artwork for the range was created by a local designer, working closely with us to capture Betsy and Bobbie's personality rather than a generic "cute cow" illustration. We wanted something that felt like it had a story behind it — because it does — and we think that comes through in the finished designs.

We honestly weren't sure how quickly this range would find its feet, being so new. It's fair to say it's exceeded our expectations — it's already becoming one of our fastest-moving designs, and we couldn't be happier about how retailers and their customers have taken to Betsy and Bobbie.

A range made to be told as a story

One of the things we love most about the Highland Cow range is how naturally it works as a collection rather than a single hero product. Because every piece shares the same character and colour story, it lends itself beautifully to being displayed together — tea towels layered with pot holders, a jotter tucked in alongside, all telling the same little story on a shelf or table display.
